How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works for Athletes?

After engaging in high-intensity exercise, the body’s energy supply is mainly dominated by the glycolysis system, leading to the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles and bloodstream. This results in a drop in pH levels, leading to fatigue.

Lactic acid is an intermediate product formed during the metabolism of glucose in the body during exercise. If the exercise intensity exceeds that of aerobic exercise, the lactic acid produced cannot be broken down into water and carbon dioxide in a short time, leading to anaerobic metabolism and a buildup of lactic acid in the body. This can cause muscle soreness and fatigue.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can increase the amount of oxygen in the blood, decrease carbon dioxide levels, increase the pH value, increase tissue oxygen reserves, and eliminate lactic acid, thereby speeding up recovery.

HBOT doesn’t require any recovery time, which makes it very appealing to athletes and anyone with a busy schedule. Treatment sessions last between 60 to 120 minutes and patients typically look forward to this therapy as a time to relax and unwind, during hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment sessions, patients sit or lie down within a hyperbaric chamber that is pressurized. During this time, patients can read, listen to music, work on a laptop, watch a movie, or take a nap. They can return to their normal activities immediately afterward, which means athletes can enjoy an HBOT session before a big game.
