What Can You Do in a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy requires you to spend a considerable amount of time inside the treatment chamber to reap all the benefits. Of course, while you're there, you may want to do something to pass the time. This is understandable, so what can you do and not do to help make the treatment a more pleasant experience?

1. What can you do inside the hyperbaric chamber?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is performed inside a single-person hyperbaric chamber, where one person receives treatment at a time, or in a multiplace hyperbaric chamber treating patients simultaneously. A typical treatment session lasts approximately two hours, sometimes longer, depending on the condition. Depending on the type of hyperbaric chamber you're in, you can take the following steps to help pass the time: bring a book or magazine to read in the room (only in multi-person rooms); bring a Sudoku book or other puzzle book (only in multi-person game rooms); play poker with other patients (only in multi-person rooms); watch movies on the provided equipment; listen to music on the sound system; catch up on your favorite TV series; take a nap and catch up on much-needed rest. Of course, this isn't a comprehensive list, but it should help you think of things you can do to make hyperbaric oxygen therapy a more comfortable experience. Before bringing anything into the hyperbaric chamber, however, it's important to understand what you shouldn't bring during the treatment.

2. What can't you do or bring inside your hyperbaric chamber?

Due to the high atmospheric pressure and oxygen content inside the hyperbaric chamber, certain items are prohibited. Don't bring flammable materials into the room (matches, lighters, newspapers, cigarettes); synthetic materials (nylon, polyester, etc.); oil-based or petroleum products (including lipstick, hair gel, lotion, face cream, nail polish); electronic products (any product with batteries, such as mobile phones, fitness trackers, watches, and hearing aids); food is not allowed; locally painful heat pads, etc. By following some key tips, you may even find that using the hyperbaric chamber is a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Make sure you don't bring valuables into the hyperbaric chamber. If you wear contact lenses, bring your lens case with you so you can remove the lenses before the procedure. If you have prescription glasses, it's best to wear them. Although the treatment center will provide a locker for you to store your valuables, it's best to leave your valuables at home for your peace of mind, and using a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for home may be more convenient.
